Cyclone Update 5
For past few days we have been getting regular updates from both Tonga and Samoa.  Samoa’s more robust infrastructure is such that cyclones do not have the same impact.
However Rotarians have been out delivering Rotary New Zealand’s Emergency Response Kits to families referred to them by Samoa’s NDMO (National Disaster Management Office)
Each Kit supplemented with a sack of rice and two boxes of food.   In Tonga, the NDMO continues to refer cases to Rotary.

Reaching the Hard to Reach  -  Polio Eradication
Roqia holds her young son, who was reported through the local surveillance network in Bamyan, Afghanistan, as having acute flaccid paralysis. ©WHO Afghanistan

The poliovirus remains in just a few small pockets around the world. However, these final hiding places are some of the most challenging settings on earth in which to eradicate a disease. Finding and stopping a virus whose special power is staying hidden is no mean feat, especially in remote or inaccessible places.

Disease detectives around the world are working tirelessly to find every last virus in these hard to reach places. Some areas are vast and sparsely populated, such as the broad plains and river beds making up areas of the Lake Chad region. Others are densely packed residential areas of Afghanistan, where security issues can sometimes make immunization difficult. In areas of Syria, civil war continues to rage through towns, communities, and families. Yet these challenges are not enough to stop the surveillance system.

District Grant: Takaro
ikes in Schools  Provision of spare helmets, UV vests and on-going maintenance of tracks around the school and the bikes. This project works in conjunction with the City Council and the school who have raised $50,000 to build tracks, buy bikes and purchase a lockable storage container. Takaro Rotary contribution enables the children to have the essential helmets and vests. The school is a decile one school which means that there is little money in the immediate community. The local cycle club will work with Takaro Rotary club to provide training to the children. This is a high profile project in the community with Rotary advertising their involvement.
Additional information from Takaro about the activities they have organised and been involved in as part of this project follows:

The Brave Thinkers Programme
New Zealand Business Week is about building Brave Business Leaders. It's fun, it's challenging and it's for anyone that has ever been interested in business or had a business idea.

During the intensive one week programme, students will be encouraged to be bold in their thinking, they will learn about new business models, meet other business people and combine academic learning with business decision making. By forming a virtual company, students will make decisions about marketing, personnel and production in order to develop and grow a successful business.
The week has a strong emphasis on personal development - confidence, leadership, teamwork - and includes an extensive, supervised, social programme. Have fun, meet new people, develop new skills and learn about business from your own discovery and from people who are out there doing it.
Planning for New Zealand Business Week is well underway for 2018 and we are looking forward to another very successful programme.  Over the twenty five years, thousands of students have benefited from this intensive course because of NZ Rotary’s involvement as trustees and sponsors.

  Introducing New Members to Rotary

WHAT TO COVER
Before joining, your newest members learned a little about Rotary and your club as prospective members. Build on their understanding, and answer any questions they may have. The table below offers ideas to get you started.

ROTARY
For context and depth, start by explaining:
• That your club is part of an international organization of people who share a passion for service
• Rotary’s mission and values
• Rotary’s legacy in the effort to eradicate polio worldwide
• How Rotary started and grew
Find historical information and more on the About Rotary page or take courses such as:
Rotary’s Strategic Plan, Areas of Focus, and Rotary Foundation
Basics on the Learning Center.

“NRG PROVIDES NEW ENERGY”
We have seen in New Zealand in recent years the advent of “NRG” - Next (or New) Rotary Generation -  Rotary Clubs.
The first in New Zealand was in Invercargill – they started with a presentation from human spark plug Holly Ransom in May 2015, and less   than a year later in April 2016 NRG Invercargill received their charter. Fast forward another year and in April 2017 NRG Dunedin were chartered.
Work is now underway to establish NRG Timaru, and there is also interest in other areas of New Zealand to form NRG Rotary Clubs.
So, what are these new and presumably wildly different Rotary Clubs? Well perhaps surprisingly they’re pretty much like a normal Rotary club, but with a few little twists and tweaks.

I need new underwear
Why underwear ? It is very expensive  to buy in Fiji and families can't afford it. Pre school teachers are wanting to encourage good hygiene and sanitation amongst the children.
I am asking Rotarians to donate the price of a pair of boys or girls knickers aged for 2-4 year olds.  The money will go to the Fiji Squatters Camp Pre School
These children have come from outer Islands with their families to Suva to look for work and to give their children an opportunity for education. They arrived with nothing and there are 4 of these camps alone in Suva.

District Grants  -  A New way to become an Approved Club
In an effort to simplify processes for clubs and make it easier to be "approved" to apply for a District Grant we are trialing a new method for clubs.  Clubs will no longer be required to send someone to District Training for a session on Grants BUT with all the information you need located on the District website in the Documents folder for Rotarians you only need to read the material and send in the completed MOU by 15 May.
Full details and a brochure will be given to PE's at SSPETS this weekend so they can come back to clubs with the information.

If your club is interested in applying for a Global Grant - pick up the phone or email Simon Manning or myself.  We can help to get the ball rolling and put you in touch with the right people

Adrienne Murray
District Grants Chair

PS  Please still come to District Training Day immediately after Rotafest in May.  There will be lots of other interesting sessions for you

Roland Woods
Rotarians are advised of the sad passing early in January of Rowland Woods, a Past President and PHF of the Rotary Club of Karori following a short illness, at the Mary Potter Hospice, Wellington, aged 81. Rowland served District on the International Committee and was also a member of the Rotary New Zealand World Community Service Committee.
He had a deep interest in  immigrants and refugees coming to New Zealand and was a barrister and chairman of Rowland Woods Legal, with offices in Wellington and Dunedin, specialising in immigration and refugee law. Rowland was still in fulltime practice at the time of his death. He was very active for some considerable time in the Rotary Club of Karori together with his wife Anita, assisting new migrants and their needs settling in Karori. The Club presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Rowland for his outstanding service to Rotary and the community during his time in hospital in Wellington in  December.
District Rotary conveys its deepest sympathy to Rowland’s wife Anita and her family on their sad loss.
Please note that there will be a memorial service for Rowland  9 April at 11am at St Johns Church Willis St Wellington.

Building Peace through Rotary

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, at the end of 2016, 65.6 million people had been displaced by conflict, violence, or persecution. Rotary members refuse to accept conflict as a way of life and are committed to pursuing projects that address its underlying causes, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
Rotary projects often include training that fosters understanding and equips communities with skills for resolving conflicts.
