District Governor Martin’s March Message

In the past year, we have had a lot of media coverage about unsafe water in New Zealand.  Last year water supplies in Havelock North and Pahiatua were contaminated.  Just last week government announced a plan to make 90 percent of rivers swimmable by 2040.
Globally the situation is more dire.  One in ten people do not have access to safe water – that’s over 660 million people.  One third of the global population lack access to a toilet – that’s 2.4 billion people.  More people have a mobile phone than a toilet.  “The water crisis is the #1 global risk based on impact to society (as a measure of devastation), as announced by the World Economic Forum in January 2015” states water charity water.org
This month is Rotary’s Water and Sanitation Month.  As Rotarians we can make a significant difference to improve the lives of others by providing water and sanitation.

A group of young Rotarians, Rotaractors and Youth Exchange students met in Canberra in September 2015 to focus on four key questions:
1. How can Rotary be more appealing to young people?
2. How can we better retain our alumni?
3. As a young Rotarian, how do you lead within your club?
4. What support, if any, do you require to make an effective contribution to Rotary?

Gillies McIndoe Research Institute
Gillies McIndoe Research Institute and Salk Institute Stem Cell Reprogramming Scholarship Sponsored by Rotary International
We are very grateful to Rotary International, in particular the Rotary Club of Plimmerton and the Rotary Club of Del Mar, for their support in establishing the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute (GMRI) and Salk Institute Scholarship opportunity, which will allow the exchange of a staff member between the GMRI and the Salk institute in San Diego for a total time of six weeks. This interaction will lead to the professional development of staff members of the GMRI, and promote wider professional and collaborative relationships between scientists at the GMRI and research institutions in San Diego
We are looking for clubs to help sponsor this scholarship and program.

Not only am I looking for interesting stories and news each month but so is Beryl Robinson as NZ editor for Rotary Down Under.
Please get your stories to me each month and IF there in an opportunity for wider exposure such as through Rotary Down Under, at that stage we would need the hi-res pictures (as taken on the camera).  I will need your help, sometimes on short notice to get hold of those.
Below is a list of RDU topics for the coming 12 months.  Articles are needed via berylrobinson@rotarydownunder.co.nz at least 2 months prior to the magazine.
