District Governor Martin’s April Message

The past couple of months have reinforced for me how active our Rotary Clubs are in the community.  I have attended several Cluster and District Committee meetings and there have been so many Rotary events that I have not been able to attend all that I have been invited to.
Just to name a few in the past few weeks where I have seen at first hand the great work you are doing in the Community - the Rotary Martinborough Fair (South Wairarapa Rotary), the Inglewood Rotary Car Show, OnYou health initiative with the Wanganui Clubs, the Petone Rotary Fair, ambulance handover to Wellington Free Ambulance (Wellington Region Rotary Clubs), beach digs at Lyall Bay (Wellington South Rotary) and Freyberg Beach (Courtenay Place Rotary), the launch of Innovative Young Minds (Hutt City Rotary), International Women's Day lunch (Kapiti Rotary), Mike King Suicide Prevention Dinner (New Plymouth West Rotary).
There are many more meetings and events that I have not mentioned but which are often highlighted on our District 9940 Facebook page. You are making a real difference in your communities.

Saving Mothers and Children

Nearly 6 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. We expand access to quality care, so mothers and their children can live and grow stronger.

New Zealand Rotary History
Dear All,
The correspondence on the history has indicated that all the New Zealand Districts favour a New Zealand rather than a New Zealand/Australia history and I will advise our Australian friends accordingly.
With respect, I believe that the history should be properly collated as there should be a reference available to those who look back on where we came from to get a vision of where we should be going. Can I make a suggestion to you for something that can be done immediately as a first step. There have been a considerable number of histories of clubs and districts already produced and we should collect what we can so that we can consider the options in style and format. I have ten histories on my bookshelf and suspect that I left several behind when we shifted to an apartment and downsized. I treasure these but there are probably copies of various histories sitting around with people who would willingly be prepared to donate them for the common good.
Is there are any club, District or New Zealand Rotary histories that Rotarians would be prepared to donate as references to a yet to be formed committee to start work on compiling a Centennial history?
We need copies of Fred Hall-Jones Rotary in New Zealand which covers 1921 to 1970 and Bert Dreaver’s Rotary in the Seventies as the comprehensive overviews  (note:  we now have 1 copy of each of these) and there is great history in books compiled by our early clubs.
Sometime soon we need to establish a committee with a representative from each district to begin compiling material and this will eventually lead into a discussion on how the material should be published and a method to finance this. We need to recognise that districts will need to give some financial support. I would suggest that when we have the district representatives, the districts finance a trip to Wellington or wherever for a one day meeting to plan the work. The committee will not do all the work but should delegate such duties as the gathering the information for appendices. Fortunately travel is now cheap so the cost of meeting should not be expensive.

We ask for expressions of interest for a District 9940 representative for the Centennial History Committee.  Please contact Martin Garcia directly.

Highlights from the January 2017 Rotary International Board of Directors Meeting
The third 2016–17 RI Board of Directors meeting was held on– January 2017 in Evanston, IL USA. At this meeting, the Board reviewed eight committee reports and recorded 61 decisions.
Clubs and Districts
In accordance with the RI Bylaws, which requires the Board to review the composition of zones at least every eight years, the Board agreed to a realignment of the 34 Rotary zones. This new zone structure will be posted to rotary.org.
The Board noted that the RI Bylaws permit a Rotarian to be a member of more than one club at the same time. The Board affirmed, however, that for any dual-member Rotarian, Rotary will officially recognize only the membership in the club to which the Rotarian pays dues.
In accordance with the findings from Rotary’s strategic planning effort, the Board agreed in concept with testing a global membership model that is not club-based.
In addressing how to grow Rotary’s membership, the Board ap-proved regional membership initiatives that align with the zone structure, to include annual funding tailored for each zone for training and other membership-related initiatives.
In reviewing districting matters, the Board approved a national redistricting plan in Brazil.

PHF Applications by Clubs
It is probably a good time to remind clubs wishing to present PHFs later in the year and especially at changeovers, that they should be making their applications as soon as possible (ideally by end of April) to avoid the rush of last minute applications.
Please allow a lead time of about 4 weeks to ensure a comfortable delivery.

Clubs wishing advice and assistance with their applications and the form required should contact me as soon as possible as there are already delays due to heavy demand at Parramatta.
On basis of previous years they will process in excess of 8000 phfs between now and the end of July.

Cheers
cjrr

A Challenge for all Rotarians
Mark Bishop in Germany
Think of a young person between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age.  Now, take some time to think about their situation in New Zealand, their family, their school, their sports & music maybe.
Next, choose a country from the following list;
  • Germany    France
  • Italy            Switzerland
  • Austria        USA
  • Chile           Argentina
Now put your young person in that country doing their favourite thing.   I can see my young niece after playing a game of hockey in Paris chatting and laughing with her teammates.  Her face is lit up and her smile makes me feel emotional.  Her Rotary Youth Exchange is changing her life forever.
You can make a difference too - think of a young person, talk to them about the Rotary Exchange Programme and if they think it is for them - contact the RYE committee.
The 2018 Outbound applications are about to close - if you need further information please visit our website www.rye9940.co.nz or email me: minispecialist@xtra.co.nz
