Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group
Letter for RI President Ian Riseley
 Dear fellow Rotarians,

At the beginning of this Rotary year, I issued a challenge: for every Rotary club to plant one tree for each Rotary member. My goal in doing so was twofold. The first goal was obvious: trees are good for us. They absorb carbon and release oxygen, they support biodiversity, they improve our soil, our climate, and our moods. We need more of them, and planting trees is a wonderful project for all Rotary clubs to do together.

On another level, I asked Rotarians to plant their trees by today—Earth Day—to raise awareness of issues that are too rarely mentioned in Rotary. While not an area of focus, the environment is a physical reality that underpins every area of Rotary’s work, and we ignore its health at our peril

What's Happening behind the scenes
 What's Happening??
Well . . . .
as clubs begin to feel that things are winding down and they're starting to cruise towards the end of the year, behind the scenes things are really starting to wind up for the new Rotary year.
I am learning about our clubs and our district every day. The Rotarians I meet make me proud to be part of an organisation that is truly ‘Making a Difference’ and which will go forward to ‘Be the Inspiration’ to our communities, local and global, in 2018-19
Almost all of our District 9940 clubs have selected their Presidents for 2018-19 and those Presidents-Elect have gathered a team to lead their clubs. As District Governor I must do the same – gather a team to support not only myself but more importantly to support our clubs through the 2018-19 Rotary year.

Global Grants - The Benefits of a Project Manager
Did you know you can use funds from a Rotary Global grant to hire a Projects Manager?
You can use up to 10% of a grant to hire a local Project Manager.  Hiring someone local who knows the community can increase the cultural sensitivity and build the host clubs capability to manage future projects.

Opportunity to Get Involved in a Global Grant

Quality Education Nepal

Imagine sending your children to a school where the teachers have no tertiary education and little training.  What education would they receive?  Yet that is the lot of most children of Nepal, the poorest country outside Africa.

Australian Rotary project "Quality Education Nepal" has been addressing this issue since 2011.  150 teachers have completed 3 years basic training (50 days) and are now receiving annual refresher training.  Another 150 have since been brought into the program, including an intake of 75 funded by a Rotary Foundation Global Grant project.

Training is delivered by LEARN (“Lifting Education, Advancing Rural Nepal”), an NGO established in 2014 specifically devoted to this program.  The trainers are experienced Nepalese teachers with Masters qualifications.  Their language, culture and knowledge of the curriculum allow them to deliver training more effectively and at far lower cost than any vocational exchange program - just US$15.50 per trainee day.  An MoU with the Department of Education ensures that the programs are aligned with government policy, with DoE staff actively involved in delivery.

To reach more teachers we need more Global Grant projects, each providing 50 days training for 70-80 teachers.

If your club make even a modest commitment to a project over a three-year time-frame, you can help us reach many more teachers.  Please email peter@nepalaid.org.au to explore the possibilities.  Find out more at www.nepalaid.org.au, watch the videos at tinyurl.com/yd5x7ctd, or visit us in the House of Friendship in Toronto.

Rarotonga Mobile Health Clinic  -  Progress of the Bus
The bus is on its way, travelling up the country to Auckland from where it will be shipped to Rarotonga.

The team in Rarotonga

A formal send off from Masterton was held on Sunday 15 April when around 20 Rotarians including DG Mitch and DGE Marion attended as well as local dignatories from the Wairapara.  A number of locals took the opportunity to look at the medical facilities set up inside the bus and congratulate the team who had worked to so hard to ensure this happened.  The handover to the Rarotonga government will take place in Apia on 18 June and approximately 16 Rotarians will be attending.  DG Mitch will be there on his way to Toronto for the RI International conference.

Victory over Vermin: Another District Grant Story
n late 2015 the Rotary Club of Wellington was approached by the Wellington City Council to see whether it would work in partnership with the Council to set up a community group to trap vermin on the Mt Victoria Town Belt. This was in an effort to ‘bring back the birds’.
A series of community meetings was held during 2016 to garner support, and in October of that year the first traps were installed. These were funded by the Rotary Club of Wellington and the Wellington City Council and installed and maintained by keen residents from the surrounding residential area.

Rotary Club of Whanganui Daybreak Present Dictionaries to Te Kura Kaupapa o Tupoho.
President Marie Baker presented the Rotary Dictionaries to 25 Year 5 students at Te Kura Kaupapa o Tupoho.  The Kura is a full immersion school where no English is spoken unless in English classes which start at Year 5.  The students welcomed the visitors with a waiata, courteously thanked President Marie for the gifts then become immersed in their dictionaries.  Their teacher shared that ‘The students loved using the dictionaries.    …. had organised dictionary activities and they were totally involved in the task.’   The dictionaries are perfect for supporting their learning in English literacy.

Another Global Opportunity: Balibo
 Remember the Balibo 5?

The Balibo Five was a group of journalists for Australian television networks who were killed in the period leading up to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor. The Balibo Five were based in the town of Balibo in East Timor (then Portuguese Timor), where they were killed on 16 October 1975 during Indonesian incursions before the invasion.[1] Roger East travelled to Balibo soon after to investigate the likely deaths of the Five and w
as later executed by members of the Indonesian military on the docks of Dili.
There is a Rotary connection and clubs in Australia have been working in the town to help rebuild and to build schools for the local children.  What follows is a letter sent to Donna Reed (incoming President for Plimmerton) who is the cousin of one of those killed
